Houston Hosts Leonard Hilton Memorial Meet

The University of Houston Track and Field team kicked off the 2003 indoor season on Saturday (Jan. 18) afternoon in hosting the Leonard Hilton Memorial Meet at the Yeoman Field House inside the Athletics/Alumni Center and made a strong opening in taking two field events and placing in the top five in 12 events overall.
Among the schools competing in the meet, which was not scored, included Baylor, Hampton University, Louisiana Tech, Rice (Women), Sam Houston, SMU, Southeastern Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Southern and UTSA.
Headlining the competition on Saturday were indoor world record holder Maurice Green, Kaaron Conwright and Floyd Green in the 60-meter dash, former Texas A&M runner Larry Wade in the men's hurdles and two of the USA's top women sprinters in Inger Miller and Torri Edwards.
After crossing the finish line with a time of 6.63 in the preliminaries of the 60m dash, Green set a both a new meet and Field House mark with a final time of 6.60 seeconds. Houston's Stanford Routt, who was in the lane next to Green in the finals, placed third with a time of 6.70, while fellow Cougar Fred Day followed in seventh place with a time of 6.78. Conwright finished in fifth with a time of 6.74 and Heard finished in eleventh (6.85)
"It's (this coming season) going to go pretty good, " Green said following his record-breaking run in the first indoor meet of the 2003 season. "I just wanted to come out here and get a nice warm-up and get my technique down."
As for Miller and Edwards, Edwards posted a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.38 seconds, and Miller, after qualifying in the preliminaries with a time of 7.46, did not run in the finals.
In the field events, Houston dominated the men's long jump, with Jason Edwards taking the event with a final of 25 feet, two inches, with Brandon Womack in fourth (22-5.5 ft.) and Brandon Bray in seventh with a jump 22-1. In the men's pole vault, Daniel Patton took second in clearing 16 feet and three-quarters, with Kevin Watson (15-7) and Jason Myers (14-7.5) finishing in fourth and fifth places, respectively.
Three Cougars advanced to the finals of the men's shot put, with Jean Tennison placing second (52-2 ft.), Jacob Rodriguez taking fifth (50-9.5 ft.) and Derek Randall rounding out the top eight with a best of 48-7.5 feet.
Shayla Bowmam wrapped up the women's weight throw, easily taking first with a throw of 53-1.5 feet, nearly two feet ahead of SMU's Eva Charfreitagova, who placed second with a throw of 51-3.5 The Cougars' Allie Booker placed fifth in the weight throw with a best of 13.66 meters. Jessica Edwards placed fourth in the women's pole vault in clearing 11-5.75 feet, while Booker placed third in the shot put with a best of 44-0.5 feet.
In the running events, Routt and teammate Robert Foster took the 1-2 spots in the men's 200-meter dash with times of 21.22 and 21.87 seconds, respectively. Michael Olague placed second in the men's 5000 meter run (15:07.95), and in the men's 60-meter hurdles, Houston's Milton Manson (8.08 seconds) and Andrew Carruthers (8.13 seconds) placed fifth and seventh, while Cougars Lauren Smith (8.47 seconds), Alicia Cave (8.67 seconds) and Magenta Taylor (8.72 seconds) took fifth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
The meet was the first of six indoor meets that the University of Houston will host this season. The other meets include the Houston Indoor Opener next weekend on Saturday, January 25, the Houston Indoor Classic on February 1, the Houston Indoor Invitational on February 8, the UH/RunSport All-Comers Meet on February 15 and the Conference USA Indoor Championships on February 28-March 1.
