LOUISVILLE - The University of Houston women's basketball team will continue its campaign for a 2003 Conference USA Championship as it travels north this weekend for a pair of league match-ups. The Lady Cougars (9-4, 1-0 C-USA) will face Louisville (9-5, 0-1 C-USA) Friday at 6 p.m. at Freedom Hall and Cincinnati Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Shoemaker Center.
Houston has won seven of its last nine and is coming off a 64-50 win Sunday over C-USA and in-state rival TCU at home. The Lady Cougars are led by All-American Chandi Jones (5-10, G), who leads the conference and is second in the nation in scoring, averaging 26.5 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest.
The Cardinals fell to league rival Cincinnati 67-48 in their conference opener Saturday, breaking a six-game win streak dating back to Dec. 22. Louisville, who was picked to finish fifth in C-USA behind Houston this season, is led by senior Lori Nero (6-2, C) and junior Sara Nord (5-4, G) who lead the team in scoring (17.2 ppg) and assists (7.5 apg), respectively.
The Cardinals lead the all-time series against the Lady Cougars 5-2. Like Houston, who is 6-1 at Hofheinz Pavilion, Louisville has had great success in front of its home crowd, losing only one contest at Freedom Hall this season.
The Lady Cougars, who are 1-1 on the road this season, will cross the state line into Ohio to battle Cincinnati at the Shoemaker Center Sunday afternoon. The game will be televised on ESPN2 and tip-off is set for 2 p.m. CST.
