HOUSTON, Texas - University of Houston middle hitter Jenny Tanneberger was named Conference USA Player of the Week for the period ending September 8.
In three matches last week, the San Antonio native tallied 66 kills, 19 digs and 12 blocks to help lead the Cougars to a 2002 Crowne Plaza/Rice Invitational championship title. Tanneberger was named the 2002 Crowne Plaza/Rice Invitational MVP while teammates Donna Sellen and Jane Anne Karasek were named to the All-tournament team.
Tanneberger, a 2002 All-C-USA Preseason Team selection, averaged .526 hitting, 18.7 kills and four blocks per game in the tournament with wins over TCU, Louisiana-Lafayette and cross-town rival Rice. This season, Tanneberger leads the team in kills (134) and blocks (38) in seven non-conference matches.
This is the first time she has been honored with the Conference USA Player of the Week Award. Tanneberger was also a 2001 First-Team All-C-USA selection in her first year as a Cougar after transferring from the University of Texas.
The 7-0 Cougars are off to their best start since 1987. Tanneberger and her Cougars teammates will host Lamar in their home opener Tuesday, September 10, at 7:30 p.m. at Hofheinz Pavilion. The Cougars defeated the Cardinals earlier this season in the final match of the Lamar Cardinal Classic in Beaumont, Texas.
