Junior forward Marte Dolva had a breakout performance for the University of New Mexico women's soccer team Friday (Sept. 6) night, scoring two goals and notching an assist, as the Lobos downs the University of Houston Cougars by a final of 4-0 in the opening round of the 2002 Lobos Adidas Classic in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Lobos out-shot the Cougars, 22-7,and limited Houston to a mere three shots on goal.
The game began slowly as both teams tried to find a rhythm. The Lobos were the first to make their mark on the scoreboard in the 27th minute after a misfired kick from Cougar goalkeeper Erin Ferguson found its way to the foot of Marte Dolva. The junior from Geilo, Norway, placed a shot low in the corner of the Houston goal, out of reach of a diving Ferguson. Dolva would strike again seven minutes later with New Mexico's second goal on a penalty kick that resulted from a foul and subsequent yellow card in the Houston box. Dolva cracked a shot that hit the upper netting in the center of the goal. The shot fooled Ferguson, who dove to her left.
UNM would continue its scoring streak in the second half with a goal from junior Erchen Theys. In the 48th minute, Theys broke free in the midfield, faked out two Cougar defenders, and rifled a shot for the score.
The Lobos' substitute midfielder Coco D'Angelo would finalize the score with a goal at the 78:15 mark when she received a through ball from the left side that she subsequently slipped past a Houston defender and newly substituted goalkeeper Sarah Webster.
The Cougars managed a total of seven shots, three of which were recorded by freshman Kelly Golden. Houston keeper Sarah Webster and UNM's Kristen Winters (Lakewood, Colo.) made two and three saves, respectively. Winters recorded the shutout for the Lobos.
With the loss, Houston's season record now rests at 1-1-0. Next up in the Lobos Adidas Classic Tournament, the Cougars take on UTEP on Sunday, Sept. 8, with kick-off slated for 12:00 p.m.
Houston returns home to Robertson Stadium to host North Texas on Friday, Sept. 13 with kick-off scheduled for 7:00p.m.
