Cougars Fall to No. 2 Rainbow Wahine

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The University of Houston volleyball team was defeated by No. 2 Hawai'i 3-0 late Friday night in front of a crowd of 6,560 at the Stan Sheriff Center. Hawai'i (9-0) now leads the all time series against the Cougars (7-4) 7-0.
Hawai'i took an early lead to defeat Houston in three straight sets, 30-17, 30-17 and 30-20. The Cougars hitting percentage was at a season low .044 while the Rainbow Wahine hit .435 and outblocked Houston 13-3.
Middle hitter Jenny Tanneberger, who is returning from a shoulder injury, led the team with five kills and two blocks. Setter Donna Sellen also had five kills, 14 assists and four digs in the effort.
Outside hitter Jane Anne Karasek also added four kills, 11 digs and one block. Freshman libero Jaci Gonzalez added eight defensive digs and Mirela Vasconcellos had seven.
Hawai'i, who moved from No. 4 to No, 2 in the USA Today/AVCA polls last week, was led by Kim Willoughby, who racked up 17 kills for a .600 hitting percentage, contributed five service aces, and added seven blocks.
The Cougars will take on St. Mary's (3-4) tomorrow at 5 p.m. CST in Honolulu. Houston leads the all-time series against the Gaels 3-0.
Action returns to Hofheinz Pavilion on October 4 when Houston battles conference rival Tulane at 7:30 p.m.
