Waco, Texas - The University of Houston volleyball team defeated Baylor, 28-30, 30-21, 30-25 and 30-28 tonight at the Ferrell Center in Waco. The victory puts the Cougars on a two-match win streak following a 3-1 win over Saint Mary's of California Sunday in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Houston (9-4, 0-0 C-USA) now leads the all-time series against Baylor 31-1. The only Cougar loss to the Bears (6-5, 0-2 Big 12) came in 1993 when the teams were still Southwest Conference rivals.
Syracuse transfer Laura Koster and middle hitter Jenny Tanneberger, who is back from a shoulder injury, led the Cougar offense with 15 kills apiece. Koster added nine digs and two blocks while September 8 Conference USA Player of the Week Tanneberger contributed seven digs, four blocks and hit .400 at the net.
Outside hitter Jane Anne Karasek was also strong on both sides of the ball, posting 14 kills, nine digs and two blocks. Freshman libero Jaci Gonzalez led the Cougar defense with 13 digs and four assists.
Setter Donna Sellen also had a solid match, contributing 50 assists, six digs, six block assists and one solo block.
After a close 28-30 first game, the Cougars came out strong to defeat the Bears at the net in the second and third games, 30-21 and 30-25. Houston hit better than .300 in both of those games. Possession of the ball went back and forth in the final game, but Houston scored three straight to finish it 30-28.
The Cougars will take a week off to rest and prepare for C-USA competition. Action returns to Hofheinz Pavilion on October 4 when Houston battles conference rival Tulane at 7:30 p.m.
