Cougars Fall to Ohio in Final Day of Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Florida - The University of Houston volleyball team was defeated by Ohio University 3-1 today in the teams' first ever meeting. The loss came in the final day of the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational hosted by No. 6 Florida. Florida upset No. 1 Stanford, who defeated Houston 3-0 last night, in three games in the championship match a few hours later.
The Bobcats (7-1) won the first game easily 30-16, but the Cougars battled back to win the second game 30-26. After two more games won by Ohio, the final result was 30-16, 26-30, 30-25 and 30-26.
Outside hitter Jane Anne Karasek led the Cougars with 20 kills, 17 digs, and one block. Karasek was also named to the 2002 All-Tournament Team, which included Nicole McCray (Florida), Jacque Robinson (Florida), Aury Cruz (Florida), Laura Hageman (Ohio), Ashley Ivy (Stanford) and Ogonna Nnamani (Stanford).
Houston native Laura Koster posted 17 kills, nine digs and four solo blocks in the effort. Last week's Conference USA Player of the Week Jenny Tanneberger also added 13 kills, seven digs and two solo blocks.
Mirela Vaconcellos led the Cougar defense with 17 digs and freshman libero Jaci Gonzalez added 11. Donna Sellen handled the Cougar setting duties, posting 36 assists.
The Cougars will head back to Texas to battle Baylor in Waco Thursday, September 26 at 7 p.m. Action returns to Hofheinz Pavilion on October 4 when Houston battles conference rival Tulane at 7:30 p.m.
