Where can you find diversity in the city of Houston? It's a little closer than you think. The 2002-03 University of Houston women's tennis team represents five continents and eight countries and is the most diverse Cougar team.
Sophomore Kandace Ridgeway, a Pasadena native, is the only American on this year's squad. Junior Karine Urbin hails from neighboring Canada, but has lived in Houston since moving from Quebec in 1999.
Newcomer Cristina Rueda Flores Bravo, a native of Veracruz, Mexico, is also not too far from home. Analia Longoni, who is expected to take the No. 1 spot on the squad this year, is a native of Caracas, Venezula, and a transfer from Stetson University in Florida.
Veteran Sarah Flood and newcomer Miranda Foley, both from England, represent the European tennis circuit. Flood is orginially from Reading and Foley is a native of Cambridge.
Florida International University transfer Hanaa Rhazi is a native of Mohamedia, Morocco, where her father and brother played handball and tennis on the national level. Newcomer Yolandi Terblanche arrived from Bloemfontein, South Africa, in late August.
Australian newcomer Sandra Blajer makes the circumference complete. This year's squad brings international experience and different styles of tennis to UH and Conference USA.
