The University of Houston football team continued its quest for redemption in 2002, partaking in two practices today despite the threat of summer thunderstorms. The Cougars held a grueling morning practice, which was followed by strictly a special teams practice in the afternoon. The rain stayed at bay in the afternoon, while thunderstorms struck right after the Cougars left the field in the morning.
The Cougars are set to participate in their first scrimmage of the fall preseason tomorrow morning, and UH head coach Dana Dimel is looking forward to seeing his squad go head-to-head.
"We're looking to get a lot of the new guys (into the scrimmage)," said Dimel, "and see what they do. We're going to see what some of the new guys and the recruits can do when it really counts...in a scrimmage. This will be their first true test to see if they can make natural transition through things."
Overall, Dimel has been quite pleased with the effort and determination illustrated by his team. The third-year head coach feels the Cougars are definitely getting off on the right foot.
"We had a good day today," added Dimel. "We went really hard in the morning, then this afternoon we went lighter with special teams and a little bit of team work. This will be good for our guys legs, and we'll respond a lot better to that."
After tomorrow's scrimmage the Cougars will continue two-a-days with an afternoon practice followed by two days (Thursday and Friday) of the twice-a-day practices. On Saturday the Cougars will hold Fan Appreciation Day in conjunction with their morning scrimmage at Robertson Stadium. This event is open to the public.
