HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston baseball team looks to continue its winning ways as it plays host to Sam Houston State at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Cougar Field.
The Cougars, ranked No. 10 in the latest Baseball America poll, come into the game on the heels of a dominating 10-1 win over Conference USA rival Cincinnati on Sunday. With that win, the Cougars claimed the series victory over the Bearcats and equaled their win total from all of last season.
Senior lefthander Keith Whatley makes his second straight midweek start. In his last outing, Whatley allowed five hits and four runs in 3.2 innings at No. 2 Rice but did not pick up a decision as the Cougars tied the game late.
This season, Whatley has assembled a 7-3 record with 32 strikeouts and a 4.33 ERA in 52.0 innings. His win total is tied for the team best and ranks third among the C-USA individual leaders.
Junior catcher Chris Snyder jumped into the team lead with a .350 batting average after a solid offensive effort last week. In four games, Snyder batted a team-best .533 with three home runs and 12 RBIs.
As a result, he jumped into fourth place in school career history with 23 home runs and now tops the Cougars with 42 RBIs.
Junior Brett Cooley leads the team with 11 home runs and is second on the squad with 38 RBIs.
Sam Houston State (17-26) comes into Wednesday's game after dropping two of three to Southland Conference rival Louisiana-Monroe.
Junior infielder Carroll Kelly leads the team with a .314 batting average, while Clint House tops the Bearkats with five home runs and 31 RBIs.
