HOUSTON, Texas - After sweeping through a tournament field against some of the nation's top collegiate baseball programs, it was only natural that the University of Houston would rank among the nation's best when the national polls came out Monday.
The Cougars, who swept No. 8 Cal State Fullerton, No. 17 USC and No. 6 Miami at the Kia Baseball Bash in Fullerton, Calif., last weekend, jumped into the national spotlight with a 10th-place ranking in the Baseball America poll released Monday. It was a jump of 15 spots from UH's previous No. 25 ranking.
UH (9-4) also jumped into the No. 16 slot in the Collegiate Baseball poll after not being ranked the entire season and received 359 points in the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Top 25 Coaches poll to earn an 18th-place ranking after earning only 66 points a week ago.
The Cougars continue their rigorous schedule against nationally-ranked teams when they travel east on Interstate 10 to meet Louisiana-Lafayette in UH's final non-conference, three-game series of the year. That series starts at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Lafayette, La.
The Cajuns were ranked No. 27 in the latest Collegiate Baseball poll.
