Cougars leave eight on-base, hit ball hard in loss

HOUSTON – The Houston Baseball team dropped the series finale to BYU on Saturday afternoon from Schroeder Park, 6-1.

Houston (16-18, 3-12 Big 12) tied the game in the third inning on a solo home run from third baseman and nine-hole hitter Jackson LaLima.

Right-handed senior pitcher Paul Schmitz (2-4) pitched 5.0 strong innings with seven strikeouts before stumbling into trouble in the sixth where he gave up three runs. The German finished the day with 5.1 innings pitched and seven strikeouts while allowing five hits and zero free passes.

BYU (18-16, 8-7 Big 12) scored multiple runs in the final third of the game for the second consecutive game in the series when the visitors scored three in the sixth, one in the seventh and one more in the ninth.

UP NEXT
Houston heads to College Station, Texas, to face #18 Texas A&M on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The matchup is the first since 2024 and will be streamed on SECN+.
