Cougar Softball Split Double header with South Florida Bulls

Tampa, Florida - Houston took on the Bulls of South Florida for their first Conference USA match-up of the year. The wind was blowing hard but the Cougars managed to split the series, loosing the first 4-3 in eight innings and winning the second of the two games 14-4.
In the first game the Bulls scored the first run of the game in the first inning on a double byCourtney Lewellen to right center. She scored Carmela Liwag who reached base by walking.
Starting the hits and the runs for the Cougars was number nine batter Candis Turnbo. She got a hold of a good pitch and knocked it over the batting cages behind the right field fence. That was Turnbo's first homerun of the year and the third of her career.
South Florida scored their second and third runs in the bottom of the third inning. The runs were scored by Shelley Riker and Carmela Liwag and hits for the Bulls were by Liwag and Ginny Georgantes who both received RBI's for their efforts.
The Houston Cougars evened the score in the fifth inning 3-3. Starting the hitting was freshman Jeanie Davis who doubled to right field, followed by Michelle Keith with a single just to the left of second base. Candis Turnbo was hit-by-pitch and Leslie Seay knocked in the second run for the Cougars with a hit to right field.
The two teams continued play into the eighth inning and Houston was unable to score a run. South Florida's Alanna Hazzard and Shelley Riker reached base on errors and were scored by an error.
The pitcher for the Cougars today was Jenny Johnson who moves to 4-5 for the year. The Cougars fall to 14-8 overall after the first game of the double header.
The second game against the Bulls began by scoring two runs on three hits spread through the first two innings.
Kim Nesloney walked to get on base and was the first Cougar to score. Nesloney was batted in by Lindsay Durham who was then thrown out at third for the first out. Leslie Seay drove a double into right center, Riane Netardus was walked and Ray Ferreris singled to centerfield and was out after over running second to end the inning.
The Cougars took their first lead of the series in the fourth inning. Ali McDougall led off the inning getting hit-by-pitch Jeanie Davis did her job by moving McDougall over with her sacrifice bunt. Michelle Keith walked and Kim Nesloney and Lindsay Durham knocked back-to-back hits and Netardus added the third hit of the inning making the score 6-2 Cougars.
The Bulls put up two more runs in the fifth inning off of hits by Stephanie Roberts and Ginny Georgantes, but the Cougars answered their runs with another one of their own. Kim Nesloney earned her second walk of the game and was scored by Leslie Seay for her second hit of the game. In the last inning Ray Ferreris teed-off for her fifth homerun of the year to begin the inning. The Bulls lost control as the game continued, making three errors made the final game score - Cougars 14 Bulls 4
The winning pitcher for the Cougars was Jamie Falco, she is now 7-1 and the team finishes the day 15-8. The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow (March 3, 2002) for the third game in the Conference USA series.
