Cougar Softball Drops Two to Southern Miss Golden Eagles

Houston, Texas - The Cougars lost two games today to the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss 5-2 and 10-4.
The Golden Eagles took the lead with a solo homerun in the second inning by Kenya Peters. The Cougars responded with a single in the second. Ali McDougall singled to reach base and then Kim Nesloney knocked a triple to right field to score McDougall, the score after two innings, 1-1.
Southern Miss took the lead again in the fourth, scoring two on two hits by Channika Gant and Heather Bell. The Lady Eagles scored two again in the fifth, on one hit, a walk and two errors. The hit by Kristie Martin.
The Cougars attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning, but were a bit short, only scoring one on hits by Leslie Seay and Kristen Glowacz. The final score of the first game in the series, Southern Miss 5, Houston 2.
In the second game of he double-header, the Golden Eagles took an early lead on a squeeze bunt by Boyd in the top of the third, 1-0. Going into the top of the fourth, pitcher Jessica Holaway of Southern Miss had only given up two hits.
To lead off the fifth inning, Boyd of Southern Miss hit a solo homerun to take a 2-0 lead. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Ray Ferreris hit a hard single to centerfield to score Riane Netardus, who reached on a single. Kristen Glowacz reached base with a single also in the bottom of the fifth. Now with runners on 1st and 2nd Kim Cote drove a deep shot to left center, scoring two runs. After getting four hits in the bottom of the inning, the Cougars over take the lead 3-2.
To make the game even more exciting, Southern Miss' Channika Gant led off the with a single in the top of the sixth. Smith stepped up to the plate and knocked a monster hit to centerfield that scored Gant and tied the game. After loading the bases, the Cougars walked in the lead runner to make the score 4-3. Then for the second time in the inning the bases were walked loaded and another runs was walked in. Edwards of S. Miss hit a hard shot to right center to bring in two more runs, all on two outs. Unfortunately the Cougars were unable to counteract the Golden Eagles commanding lead 7-3 in the top of the seventh.
The Golden Eagles upped the lead to 10-3 in the top of the seventh with more solid hitting. The Cougars put one more up on the board with a solo homerun to make it 10-4. That was Glowacz's fourth homer of the year.
With the two losses the Cougars fall to 2-3 in Conference USA play and 22-11 overall. They will face Southern Miss tomorrow at 1:00pm for the third game of the C-USA series.
