Houston Softball Slips Below Buckeyes

Houston, Texas - Sunday ended a bit earlier than expected for the softball Cougars, who were disappointed by a pre-championship game loss to Houston Invitational Tournament top seed, Ohio State (9-1), by a score of 5-0 .
Ohio scored their first run in the second inning made possible by hits from the Buckeyes Roth and Pozzi. They scored the next two in the fourth on two hits and an error, the hits by Rowlands and Fowler. The buckeyes sealed the game in the fifth with two hits by Link and Dedic and a series of Houston errors.
Offensive contributions for the Cougars: Designated player of the game, Kim Cote, went 1-for-2 with a walk, Michelle Keith went 1-for-2 and Candis Turnbo went 1-for-1 and also added a sacrifice bunt.
The weekend was not without hope, though. The Cougars finish the weekend with an overall record of 12-2 and will be back in action on Wednesday February 20 at 4:00pm for a double header against the McNeese State.
Noteworthy offensive performances for the weekend were recorded by Michelle Keith and Riane Netardus. Keith went 8-14 for the weekend and added 6 RBI helped by her first career grand slam in the game versus Stephen F. Austin. She is now batting .375 for the season and slugging .583 with the help of her three extra base hits. Senior Riane Netardus went 10-for-20 with six runs scored and 1 RBI. She is now batting .349 and has fifteen hits on her resume.
