HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston baseball team looks to return to its winning ways Friday when it competes during the first day of the Lone Star Classic at Round Rock, Texas.
The Cougars (2-2) face Texas Tech at 5 p.m. Friday at Dell Diamond and wrap up their stay at the two-day event when they meet host Southwest Texas State at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Sophomore righthander Brad Sullivan looks for his first decision of the year when he takes the mound against the Red Raiders. In his first start last weekend at the Astros College Classic, Sullivan allowed only two hits and two unearned runs while striking out a career-best-tying nine batters in 5.1 innings against nationally-ranked Baylor.
However, the Nederland, Texas, native did not pick up the decision as UH won 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning on junior catcher Chris Snyder's walk-off solo home run.
UH comes into the games on the heels of a 4-0 loss at Rice on Tuesday in the first game of the annual Silver Glove Series. It was the first time in 153 games that the Cougars had been shut out, the third-longest streak in school history and only four games away from tying the second-best streak.
Sophomore infielder Hyung Cho led all players against the ninth-ranked Owls with a pair of hits.
Junior outfielder Anthony Scalise leads the Cougars with a .417 average and has hit safely in all three games in which he has played. Snyder is tops on the squad with a .727 slugging percentage and a .562 on-base percentage, thanks to a walk and team-best four hit-by-pitches.
This will be the only time that the Cougars will face Texas Tech during the regular season. A year ago, UH took an 11-5 win over the Red Raiders at the Astros College Classic to snap a two-game losing streak to TTU.
The Red Raiders (6-3) look to regroup after last week's 1-2 performance at the Astros College Classic, where they opened with a 2-1 win over Conference USA opponent TCU but dropped consecutive games to Louisiana-Lafayette and Rice.
Chris Phillips is expected to get the start for Texas Tech. This season, Phillips is 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 25.0 innings of work.
Jon Slack and Kevin Jordan top the Red Raider offense with identical .407 batting averages.
