HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston golf team starts its 2002 spring season Wednesday, and the Cougars are probably the envy of many people across the country during the winter season.
Competing in its fourth tournament of the year, UH takes part in the Waikoloa Intercollegiate on the Waikoloa Kings Course in Kona, Hawaii.
The Cougars join Arizona State, Arkansas, UC-Santa Barbara, Fresno State, Georgia Tech, Hawaii, Kansas, Nagoya University, Mississippi, UNLV, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine, Rhode Island, USC, Stanford, Texas A&M, TCU, Texas-El Paso, Washington and host Hawaii-Hilo on the par-72, 6,594-yard course.
The tournament consists of 54 holes with 18 holes scheduled for each day through Friday.
This will be the first action for the Cougars since competing at the Long Cove International on Nov. 9-11 at Hilton Head, S.C. At that tournament, sophomore Scott Ferguson rebounded from a tough first round to shoot back-to-back rounds of 71 and finish in a tie for 26th at 9-over-par 222.
Junior Simon Robinson has been the team's leading player this season with a 71.3 scoring average, two strokes better than his closest competitor on the team. In addition, the Hartlepool, England, native was honored as Conference USA Golfer of the Month in October.
The team also picked up a recent addition in freshman Daniel Angenscheidt who joined the Cougars at the semester break from Montevideo, Uruguay. He joins 2001 C-USA Tournament individual champion Brad McIntosh and Brett Callas on the course this week.
