HOUSTON, Texas - After helping lead the University of Houston to a 2-1 record at the Astros College Classic last weekend, junior catcher Chris Snyder was named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week on Monday.
The Houston native also joined senior lefthander Keith Whatley on the Astros College Classic All-Tournament team.
Snyder was easily the team's leading hitter in three games against nationally-ranked opponents. He batted .571 with a double, home run, three RBIs and two runs against No. 16 Baylor, No. 9 Texas and No. 30 Texas A&M.
His lone home run of the event broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning and lifted the Cougars to a 3-2 win over Baylor, snapping a four-game losing streak to the Bears.
He continued his offensive performance against Texas the next night by reaching base safely in five plate appearances, thanks to two hits, two walks and a hit by pitch. In all, Snyder reached base safely in eight consecutive plate appearances midway through the tournament.
In addition, he played errorless defense behind the plate in 26 total chances.
Whatley helped set the tone for UH in its 2-1 win over No. 30 Texas A&M on Sunday. The Atlanta, Texas, native threw 6.0 shutout innings and allowed only two infield hits to go with four strikeouts on the way to his first win of the season.
