The University of Houston women's basketball team will begin practice for the upcoming 2002-03 season at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, at Hofheinz Pavilion on the UH campus.
The Lady Cougars will have their second practice on Sunday, Oct. 13, also at 10:30 a.m. All practices for the Lady Cougars this season will be open to the media.
Houston begins its fifth season under the direction of head coach Joe Curl with much anticipation and looks to continue its success each of the last two years. Last year, Houston posted a 26-8 overall record, including a 11-3 record in Conference USA, and received a Number 2 seed in the annual C-USA Tournament. After making it to the semifinals in the C-USA Tournament, Houston went on to the WNIT -- their second straight appearance in the post-season -- and fell to Oregon in the finals.
Joining returning junior Chandi Jones, an All-American and 2002 C-USA Player of the Year, on the court this season are fellow junior Nicole Oliver, the 2002 C-USA Defensive Player of the Year, and sophomores Shondra Bush, a 2002 C-USA All-Freshman, Ashley Cotton, Kiemona Harris, Sara Hinkley, Crystal Simpson and seniors Angela Curl and Nakia Holmes. New faces for Houston this season include junior-college transfer LaShinda Winters from Stephen F. Austin, who joins the team following the fall semester, and freshmen Shannon Steele and Emily Fryters.
Following two home exhibition games against the Houston Jaguars (Nov. 11) and the Houston Flight (Nov. 15), the Lady Cougars tip off the regular season against Ball State on Nov. 22 in the Indiana Tournament in Bloomington, Ind.
