Give an overall evaluation of your first start of 2002 against TCU.
Well it's good to be back starting again, but the game didn't go as I would have liked it to. I started off rusty the first couple of series and we didn't get anything going. I was trying to out think the defense go away from all of their blitzes instead of going along with the play that we had called. This hurt us the first two series we didn't get any momentum going. We did well the third series but we as an offense cannot afford to wait that long to get the offense going.
We had a lot of pressure all day on the run and passing games we are just going to try to fix those things and get one against UAB (University of Alabama-Birmingham). But TCU was solid defensively.
Saturday was a tough one, just keep doing what your best at, work a little harder and things will fall into place. You have a lot to carry but you have broad shoulders and you can handle it. What is your comment on that?
Thanks for the remark on the broad shoulders. We are going to keep on rolling, nobody is showing any signs of quitting or given up, nobody is bickering at anybody. We are just going to get our problems fixed and get the program going in the right direction.
Did the TCU defense desguise a lot of the fronts early on, and if so could this explain a lot of your early struggles throwing the ball?
Definitely, they hit their blitzes and twist games up front very well. They were running a couple of corner blitzes after the ball had been snapped so it was very difficult to read them. So finally instead of trying to out read them we stuck with what play we called and that seemed to work a lot better then trying to check everything against their defense.
How did you feel on your first start of the year? Where you nervous?
I was not nervous. I felt pretty good going into the game. Barrick (Nealy) came in before the game and talked to me, he said just get it done, relax just throw the ball. I wish we could have got one for him, since this was his first game out. I felt pretty confident and the whole offense felt confident. At half time it was 10-10 we were right in there, feeling good. Then we came out in the second half and it kind of blew up in our face.
How much have you worked on not locking in on a receive, giving the defensive backs an opportunity to look into the quarterback's eyes?
I worked very hard on that. This was one thing that our secondary, when we scrimmage them, say I do very well. I try to look off and come down to my second or third receiver. I did that in the game a few times but it was just real difficult when you have live guys coming at you and try to run around and look for the second and third receiver. I have worked real hard on that and I am continue to work on that because I think that is one thing I need to improve on even more.
