Junior Ilene Dixon recorded her fourth career two-goal game, including the gamewinner nearly six minutes into the first overtime period, to lead Southern Utah's women's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the University of Houston on Monday (Oct. 7) night.
After battling through a scoreless first half, Dixon got the Thunderbirds on the board at 1-0 in the 55th-minute on a shot that found the left corner of the Houston goal off a feed from freshman Eryn Pictum. SUU's defense held Houston scoreless until late in the 81st-minute when Nikki Hawkins converted a T-Bird defensive turnover into a goal to knot the score at 1-1.
In overtime, Pictum lobbed a shot from 40 yards which took a high bounce in the penalty box and was saved by Cougar reserve keeper Sarah Webster, but Webster's deflection glanced off the crossbar and fell in front of Dixon, who drilled the sudden-victory goal at 95:55 of the match.
Houston (5-5-2) outshot SUU 15-13, although the Thunderbirds held a 3-0 edge in overtime, while both teams finished with nine shots on goal. T-Bird keeper Megan Flowers was once again solid in net with eight saves in recording her second win of the season. Webster replaced starter Erin Ferguson in the 69th-minute and made three saves before allowing the winning goal.
