UAB's senior midfielder Cindy Penaranda took a deflected shot from teammate Jana Brauer and put it into the upper-right corner of the net past Houston goalie Erin Ferguson in the 83rd minute and the Blazers held on en route to handing the Cougars a 1-0 defeat on Friday (Oct. 11) night at Robertson Stadium.
The loss halts Houston's home win streak to eight games, a streak dating back to last season. The streak remains the second-longest home winning streak in school history behind the 11-game home streak from 1998-99. The loss was Houston's first on home turf since falling to UL-Lafayette, 1-0, on Oct. 9 last season.
Houston threatened on two corner kicks as the clock wound down. Senior Ashley Fortenberry's first corner kick with just over five minutes remaining was deflected by a UAB defender, and the second with barely 20 seconds remaining was cleared by the Blazer defense.
The Cougars out shot the Blazers, 15-10 overall on the night, including 7-6 on goal. In the scoreless first half, Houston out shot UAB, 9-5, and Cougar goalie Ferguson recorded four of her five saves on the night.
With the loss, Houston's season record falls to 5-6-2 on the year, including 1-2-2 in Conference USA action. Next up, the Cougars head to Hattiesburg, Miss., to take on C-USA opponent Southern Miss on Sunday, Oct. 13, with kick-off slated for 1:00 p.m.
