Freshman Kelly Golden slipped the winning goal past Golden Eagles' goalie Anna Snyder just over three minutes into the first overtime as the University of Houston women's soccer team pulled out a 3-2 victory over Conference USA opponent Southern Miss on Sunday (Oct. 13) afternoon in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Southern Miss got on the board first when Tricia Wiles got an assist from Katie Randolph in the eighth minute of play. Then, less than seven minutes later, Houston's Anne Gasser passed the ball to freshman Sara Hemmer, who aced a shot past Snyder to tie the score, 1-1.
Junior Nicole Aubuchon gave the Cougars a 2-1 advantage in the 57th minute before the Golden Eagles' Amanda Nadolski slipped a shot past Houston goalie Erin Ferguson to once again tie the game at 2-2.
For the Cougars, Golden led the squad with five shots on the afternoon, three of which were on goal, while Aubuchon and Hemmer both added three shots -- including two on goal.
The win halts Houston's winless streak and evens their overall record to 6-6-2, including 2-2-2 in Conference USA action. Next up, the Cougars head to Dallas, Texas, to take on Top 25 SMU on Friday, Oct. 18, with kick-off slated for 5:00 p.m. Houston returns home to Robertson Stadium and hosts C-USA opponent South Florida on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 1:00 p.m.
