Eugene, Ore. -
Former University of Houston All-American Michele Collins enjoyed her best showing at the 2001 GMC Envoy USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a second-place finish in the 400 meters.
Collins finished the race in 51.00 seconds. Latasha Colander-Richar won the race in 50.,79 seconds, while Monique Hennagan was third in 51.20 seconds.
Collins had the fastest qualifying time in the semi-finals with a time of 50.8 seconds, while her training partner, Colander-Richar had the second-fastest time of 51.48 seconds.
It was her best showing at the USA Championships since she burst onto the national scene with a third place finish in the 400 meters. She also was a Gold medalist at the World University Games that year.
Last year, Collins set personal bests in every event from the 100 to 400 meters. She earned a spot on the American team with a third-place finish at the USA Olympic Trials with a time of 50.29 seconds.
But, her hopes for a medal were dashed when she developed a stress fracture in her right hip six weeks before the Games began.
Despite the injury, she competed in Sydney, and finished fourth in the first round of the 400-meter heats. She was unable to run on the USA's 4x400-meter relay team because of the injury
