Houston jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first on four hits, two walks, a hit batter and one 49er fielding error. The Cougars and Charlotte then exchanged runs in the next two innings with UH holding a 9-4 lead after three frames. Houston pitchers Austing Faught and Bryan Harris then managed to hold the 49ers in check before adding one final run in the bottom of the eighth on the way to a final score of 10-4.
The Cougars were led in the game by the tandem of senior Sean Allen and freshman Michael Bourn, who both collected two hits, a walk each and scored two runs. Allen and freshmen Keith Ahrens and Hyung Cho all drove in two runs in the game, giving UH starting pitcher Austin Faught a comfortable early margin.
The left-hander from Jersey Village worked 6.1 innings, allowed 10 hits and struck out four to earn his fourth win of the season. Harris worked out of a jam in the seventh and finished the day allowing only one hit in 2.2 innings with two strikeouts.
Houston improved to 23-21 on the year and remains in sole possession of first place in the conference standings with a 14-3 C-USA record. Charlotte fell to 16-22 overall and 6-11 against the league. The 49ers were paced Saturday by leftfielder Thomas Bowker's 3-for-3 hitting day with a pair of runs. Matt Johnson was sharp in 4.2 innings of one-hit relief.
The teams will play finale of the three-game weekend series Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
