HOUSTON TRAVELS TO MICHAEL JOHNSON/SOUTHWESTERN BELL CLASSIC

This Week: The University of Houston men’s and women’s track and field teams will travel to Waco, Texas and compete in the Michael Johnson/Southwestern Bell Classic on April 20 and 21.
The meet begins with field events starting at 3:30 p.m. on Friday and 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. The only running events scheduled for Friday night are the men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. The women's steeplechase starts at 8:00 p.m. and the men's steeplechase will be at 8:15. The running events will resume on Saturday, April 21, at noon.
There will be men's and women's teams from 17 universities competing in the meet. They are Houston, Baylor (host), Dallas Baptist, Mississippi State, Mt. St. Clare College, Sam Houston State, Seton Hall, Southwest Texas, Southern Methodist, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Tulsa, New Mexico, Oklahoma, UTEP, and UTSA.
Last Week’s Top Women’s Performances: Senior Jackie Rzepecki won the 1,500 meters at the LSU Alumni Gold Invitational with a career-best time of 4:28.75. It marks the second time this season that Rzepecki has won a 1,500 meter race.
She also finished in fifth place in the 800 meters when she completed the race in another career-best time of 2:16.81. Her time in the 1500 meters bettered her career-best by nearly 14 seconds and her time in the 800 meters was nearly 8 seconds faster than her previous career best.
In addition to Rzepecki's career-best performances, sophomore Brandy Stewart also posted her best times of her collegiate career in the 100 meters and 200 metes. Stewart finished fifth in the 100 meters with a time of 11.81 seconds and was ninth in the 200 meters with a time of 24.20 seconds.
Senior Theodoesha Boxill seems to be fully recovered from a hamstring injury that kept her out of most of the 2001 indoor season. Boxill finished fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 54.73 seconds and her time of 24.09 seconds placed her sixth in the 200 meters. Her times lead the Lady Cougars in both events.
Senior Monica Reyna finished fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:55.85 and Heather Howse was fifth in a time of 17:59.65.
Lauren Smith was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.91 seconds and finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with 1:02.14.
LaToya Reed had season-best times in both hurdle races. Her time of 1:02.03 ranked fifth in the 400-meter hurdles, while she had a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.26 seconds.
Senior Rhian Clarke won the women's pole vault with a vault of 12 feet, 5 1/2 inches after earning C-USA women's track Athlete of the Week honors last week. Clarke automatically qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a season best vault of 13 feet, 5 1/4 inches.
Freshman Jessica Edwards finished third in the pole vault with a mark of 10 feet, 11 3/4 inches. Kim Stallman was fifth with a vautl o 10 feet.
Serina McFarland was fourth in the discus throw with 144 feet, 3 inches, while Vanessa Zavaletta was fifth in the hammer with a heave of 133 feet, 6 inches.
Briana Bassler had her best long jump of the season when she leaped 18 feet, 1 3/4 inches.
Last Week’s Top Men’s Performances: Robert Foster finished third in the 200 meters with a time of 20.91 seconds.
Fred Day finished seventh in the 100-meters with a career-best time of 10.54 seconds. Day also was ninth in the 200 meters with a wind-aided time of 21.40 seconds.
Juan Cardenas posted the fastest time by a Cougar in the 800 meters when he finished in 10 place in 1:55.57. Cardenas also posted Houston's fastest time in the 1,500 meters with 3:51.69 at the Tom Tellez Invitational on March 31.
Damien Montgomery was 12th in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.67 at LSU.
Tartou Kargou was third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a career-best time of 9:43.60 at the LSU Alumni Gold Invitational.
Senior Adonis Coles also had his season-best time of 14.46w in the 110-meter hurdles when he finished in eighth place.
Houston's 4x100 relay tandem of Day, Foster, Brandon Bray and Jason Hodge finished fifth with a season-best time of 40.67 seconds.
Jeff Mueller finished second in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 11 3/4 inches.
Adam Callahan finished eighth with a mark of 6 feet, 8 inches. Brooks Bassler and Jorge Rodriguez tied for 11th with three other competitors when they posted a leap of 6 feet, 4 inches.
Billy Leavings finished third in the pole vault with a mark of 15 feet, 7 inches, while Bill Collins was eighth a mark of 15 feet, 1 inch.
In the men's long jump, Bray finished 11th with a wind-aided leap of 23 feet, 8 1/4 inches, while Jason Edwards was 12th in 23 feet, 5 1/4 inches.
Senior Alex Herrmann finished seventh in the javelin with a season-best throw of 176 feet.
Next Week: Following Michael Johnson/Southwestern Bell Classic, Houston will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. and compete in the Penn Relays on April 26-28.
