"I am very pleased with our administrative team at large," commented Gladchuk. "After three years of fine tuning and recruiting top level professionals in our field, we now have comprised a staff that is the best I have been around.
"Kevin, Scott, Lauren and Doug will make a great impact on their respective areas of responsibilities."
Fite and Kelly will become senior staff members, assuming Associate Athletics Director's roles, while Kellar will head up the weight room as the department's new Head Strength & Conditioning Coach. King is elevated to the position of Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance.
Taking on the role of Associate A.D. for Compliance & Eligibility, Fite comes to Houston after spending over six years at the NCAA headquarters-first in Overland Park, Kan., and then in Indianapolis, Ind. Fite spent the first five years as a Student-Athlete Reinstatement Representative, where he processed reinstatement requests and self-reports submitted by member institutions on behalf of ineligible student-athletes, among other duties.
When the NCAA moved to Indianapolis in August of 1999, Fite became the Enforcement Representative until his move to Houston. In this position Fite conducted investigations of potential major violations of NCAA legislation, as well as educated involved institutions regarding the NCAA infraction process and enforcement policies and procedures.
A 1986 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa with a bachelor's degree in history education, Fite later earned his master's degree in higher education from the University of Iowa in 1991. Fite began his collegiate professional career at Iowa, where he was a graduate assistant in the Athletic Academic Services division. He also served as an Academic Counselor at Oklahoma State University from 1991 until 1993, before he was elevated to Assistant Director of Academic Eligibility at OSU in August 1993.
Kelly takes over for Adrianne Peck, a long-time University employee who announced her retirement as Associate Athletics Director for Business Operations effective March 30. Kelly brings a wealth of business experience in both the intercollegiate and academia setting. Kelly arrives from Bowling Green State University, where she spent the last year as the Assistant Athletic Director for Financial Affairs.
While at Bowling Green, Kelly oversaw a $9.3 million dollar budget and administered $2.5 million in foundation accounts. During her tenure at the Mid-American Conference school, Kelly revised all the business office procedures, including expense reimbursement, travel advances, purchase orders, on-line bill paying and monthly budget reports.
Prior to BGSU Kelly spent a year in the Business Office at the University of Missouri, where she prepared a three-year budget for the athletic department, as well as serving as the staff liaison for the ICA Strategic Planning Committee. Kelly began her intercollegiate experience at Ohio University, where she not only worked in the Department of Athletics, but she also returned to school in order to attain a master's degree in sports administration.
For 21 years Kelly was an accounting professor, teaching for seven years at the UCLA Graduate School of Management and the University of Southern California Leventhal School of Accounting before moving on to the University of Washington. From 1983 until 1997, Kelly was an Associate Professor of Accounting with tenure at UW, where she was responsible for department, college and university administrative leadership, undergraduate and graduate curriculum development, and various research projects.
Kelly received her bachelor's degree in economics and accounting from the University of Bridgeport. Later, Kelly earned her MBA from Bridgeport and her Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Alabama. She capped off her academic achievements with a master of sports administration degree from Ohio University.
Like Kelly, Kellar comes to the University of Houston from Bowling Green State, where he spent the last year as the strength and conditioning coach. He also served as the director of the BGSU Athletic Fitness Center, as well as the weight room. Kellar oversaw the strength and conditioning programs for all 22 varsity sports with the help of graduate assistants and student workers.
Kellar received his bachelor's degree in sociology with a minor in physical education from Northern Illinois University in 1986. While at NIU, Kellar earned All-America and All-MAC honors as a defensive lineman on the football team.
Kellar was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the fifth round of the 1986 National Football League (NFL) draft. After three years with the Colts, he joined the Green Bay Packers and then the Minnesota Vikings, where he retired due to injuries during the 1989 season.
Prior to Bowling Green, Kellar served as the head strength and conditioning coach, as well as the head coach for men's and women's track and assistant football coach at the College of DuPage. Kellar started at DuPage in 1990 and returned in 1993 after leaving for a brief stint at Western Kentucky in 1992.
As for King, he was recently elevated from Compliance Coordinator to Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance. King spent the last three years at Houston verifying and documenting the initial and continuing eligibility status of over 350 Cougar student-athletes. He also compiles and maintains all required documentation for 12 intercollegiate athletic squads, as well as serves as the department's liaison to the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, Office of the Bursar, Residential Life Office, Office of Admissions and the NCAA Clearinghouse.
King began his career as a Compliance Assistant at the University of New Mexico, where he spent two years (1997-98) in the Lobo Athletic Department. While at UNM King assisted in the development of NCAA compliance-related educational materials such as the University of New Mexico Compliance Manual. King also developed a NCAA compliance link to the UNM's web page aimed at educating prospective student-athletes and representatives of the University's athletics interest.
A two-time varsity letterman in lacrosse, King earned his bachelor's degree in management at Bentley College in Waltham, Mass., in 1991. King also was a team representative on the Bentley College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He is currently completing his master's degree in sports administration from UNM.
