The University of Houston women's basketball team defeated the Houston Flight in the second of two exhibition games before the start of the regular season by a final of 73-62 on Monday (Nov. 12) night at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Leading the way for the Lady Cougars was sophomore Chandi Jones, the Conference USA Freshman of the Year in 2000-01, who hit eight of her 14 field goal attempts, four of five three-point attempts and nailed each of her four free throw attempts for 24 total points. She also pulled down a game-high 13 boards--11 defensively--to complete a double-double performance, and added five assists.
Senior center Valerie Muoneke joined Jones in double figures in points with 23--17 of which came in the second half--in shooting 11-for-18 from the field. Muoneke, along with sophomore Nicole Oliver and freshman KiKi Harris, pulled down seven boards. Oliver added a team-high two steals, and sophomore Courtney Pastner passed a team-high six assists.
With a 40-34 lead going into half-time, Houston came out strong in the early goings of the second half and gained a 60-41 advantage with just over seven minutes in the game. The Flight pulled to within eight at the 3:08 mark after going on a 13-2 run, and with just 55 seconds remaining, the Flight's DeMya Walker nailed both of her free throw attempts to move the Flight within reach at 68-60. But Houston took control of the ball once again, and Muoneke sealed the Lady Cougars' victory with the final five points--a three-pointer with 26 seconds remaining a two-point field goal with just two seconds left.
Houston opens the 2001-02 regular season against the visiting University of Texas-San Antonio on Sunday, November 18, at Guy V. Lewis Court in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. The Lady Cougars are a perfect 14-0 lifetime against the Roadrunners, including 7-0 at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Lady Couagrs' season opener, as well as each home game this year and every road game against Conference USA opponents, can be heard on KGBC AM 1540. Each radio broadcast will also be broadcast over the internet at www.tsrnsports.com.
