DALLAS, Texas - The University of Houston golf team fired its best team round of the fall season Tuesday during final-round competition at the Taylor Made Red River Classic but only improved its standing by two places as low scores seemed to rule the day.
The Cougars, who were ranked 19th in the Golf Coaches Association of America preseason poll, posted a team score of 279 to earn a ninth-place finish at the 6,766-yard, par-72 course at the Dallas Athletic Club. That mark bettered UH's previous team best of 292 set at The Ridges Intercollegiate in early September.
Junior Simon Robinson earned the Cougars first top-10 finish of the year season after shooting 69 in the final round to finish with a 7-under-par 209. The Hartlepool, England, native also fired a season-low 69 in the first round of the tournament.
Junior newcomer Chris Cureton posted the Cougars' best round of the season Tuesday with a final round of 67 and finished in a tie for 51st place at 220.
However, junior Brett Callas showed the most improvement throughout the tournament. After enduring a first-round score of 79 in Monday's opening round, Callas rallied to shoot 73 in the afternoon session and capped the event with a 69 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 59th at 221.
Scott Ferguson and John Wine each tied for 47th-place with a score of 219.
Texas, which co-hosted the event with Oklahoma, captured both team and individual honors. The Longhorns finished with a team score of 30-under-par 834 to finish 10 strokes ahead of USC. Jason Hartwick maintained his lead from the first day with a final round of 70 to finish at 15-under-par 201, five strokes ahead of USC's Kevin Stadler and Oklahoma's Martin Flores.
Houston takes another month-long break from the competitive course and wraps up its fall season Nov 9-11 at the Golf World Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C.
