Cougars Scratch Out Golden Eagles in Conference Win

Houston, Texas - Houston, Texas - The Cougars took their fourth straight win tonight against the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss 2-1. The Cougars dominated the field rocketing 18 shots and 12 at the Eagles goalies. The Cougars improve to 6-8-1 and 4-4 in Conference and the Golden Eagles are now 8-6 and 2-6.
The Cougars first goal was scored at 14:59 on a penalty kick, after an aggressive foul to Nicole Aubuchon on the box. The penalty kick was taken by freshman Nikki Hawkins and punched into the lower left-hand corner of the goal just below the reach of Southern Miss' goalie Anna Snyder. The Cougars led the game at the half 1-0.
The second goal by the Cougars was on a break away play. Ashley Fortenberry lofted the ball to her sophomore teammate Nicole Aubuchon who took a power shot on the goal past the second goalie for the Golden Eagles, Leslie Schoeplein. This goal made the score 2-0 Cougars.
The Golden Eagles made a desperate attempt at a comeback with a goal following the Cougars last goal. Southern Miss' Katie Randolph sent the ball way down the field to Tricia Wiles who put the ball in for the score. The Cougars would not let the Golden Eagles near the goal later in the half, the Cougars fouling 16 times in the game to their 8.
The Cougars will be back in action at home on Sunday at 1:00pm with Tulane, the final game of the year. The seniors will be spotlighted before the game, so make sure you show up early to help honor the originators of Cougar soccer.
