Houston, Texas - The Lady Cougars defeated the Bobcats of Southwest Texas tonight at Robertson Stadium by a score of 3-0. The Cougars have now won their last three games making them 5-8-1 overall. The Bobcats fell to 11-5.
The Houston Cougars came out looking to score and succeeding early. The first goal for the Coogs took place with only 3 minutes running off the clock. Senior Melissa Raymer broke away from the pack and scored her first goal of the year and the 8th of her career on the drive.
The Cougars did not find relief in their first goal, continuing to press the ball up the field. Freshman Nikki Hawkins took a close range shot that pulled Bobcat goalkeeper Kristen Turt across the goal. The ball rebounded off her outstretched hands into the possession of Cougar Senior Jennifer Allen for the score. The Cougars led the game at halftime 2-0.
The game only became more intense as the teams met after their halftime break. With 27:37 left in the game Melissa Raymer was flattened by a Bobcat defender as she was advancing into goal territory. That set up the Cougars Nikki Hawkins on a penalty kick. Hawkins made it look easy placing the ball in the upper last corner of the goal, above the hands of Southwest Texas' goalie, Turt.
The Cougars have won three straight games including two conference matches. They are looking to continue their streak as they host Conference USA foes Southern Miss and Tulane this weekend. The Cougars will first host Southern Miss on Friday October 26 at 7:00pm at Robertson Stadium.
