Houston Swim Team Falls In Opener at LSU

Baton Rouge, LA. -- The University of Houston women's swim team was defeated in both of its opening meets of the 2000-01 season Friday night at the LSU Natatorium in Baton Rouge, LA.
The Cougars posted three individual wins but fell in both ends of a double-dual, 125-103 to Wright State and 133-94 to meet host LSU.
Houston was paced individually by sophomore Falon Hopkins, junior Elissa Nelson and senior Angela Sanchez, who all won events in the season-opener. Sanchez led a 1-2-3 UH finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, winning with a time of 1:08.94 ahead of freshman teammate Corrie Phares (1:09.94) and senior Elizabeth Boyce 1:10.47.
Elissa Nelson won the 500-free with a time of 5:08.50. The native of Alta Loma, California, was also second in the 1,000-free with a time of 10:24.03. Sophomore sprinter Falon Hopkins picked up where she left off last season, winning the 100-butterfly with a time of 57.99. The standout from nearby Lamar High School also had UH's best time in the 100-free (24.84).
The Cougar swim team will have its first home meet on Thursday, November 4. Houston will face North Texas in a dual at the UH Natatorium at 6:00 p.m.
