Coaching Accomplishments
• James Casey joined the Houston Football program as an offensive football analyst in January of 2016 following a seven-year career in the NFL.
• Following the 2017 season, Casey was named Houston's special teams coordinator.
• Casey’s second season in his current role saw the tight end position expand considerably as Romello Brooker, who entered the year with nine receptions for 55 yards and one touchdown in his career, finished the season with 29 receptions for 364 yards and six touchdowns. His six receiving scores led all tight ends in The American while his six receptions of at least 20 yards ranked second among tight ends in The American. The position added two other scores as redshirt-freshman Parker Eichenberger pulled in touchdowns on both of his two receptions for the season.Â
• The 2018 Houston offense was one of the nation’s best, ranking fourth nationally in scoring offense with 46.4 points per game and sixth nationally in total offense with 528.6 yards per game. Houston scored at least 30 points in all 12 regular-season games and hit the 40-point mark in 10 of 12 games.Â
• Houston’s 2018 offense was the epitome of balance as the Cougars and Oklahoma were the only two schools in the nation to rank in the top 20 in both rushing offense and passing offense. Houston ranked No. 14 in passing offense with 300.9 yards per game and No. 20 in rushing offense with 227.7 yards per game.
• In his first season with Houston, the Cougars’ offense finished the regular season ranked 15th in passing offense (310.9 yards per game) and 21st in scoring offense (38.0 points per game) as Houston scored at least 30 points in 11 of 12 regular season games.Â
• An All-American tight end at Rice, Casey was drafted in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans, and spent four seasons with the team, at both tight end and fullback. He later spent two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and one with the Denver Broncos.
• In just two seasons with Rice (2007-08), Casey set three program records (receptions in a season, receiving yards in a game and a season) en route to earning Freshman All-America honors in 2007 and first team All-Conference USA honors in 2008. He was also named a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2008 and received Rice’s James W. Glanville Award, presented annually to the player who has achieved excellence in athletics, academics and integrity.
• Prior to his time at Rice, Casey was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the seventh round of the 2003 MLB Draft and spent three years with organization.
