University of Houston Men’s Golf letterman Andrew Gibson returned to his alma mater after being hired as assistant coach in June 2026
Gibson joined the Cougars as a student-athlete for the 2016-17 season. After sitting out his first year as a redshirt, the Perthshire, Scotland, native competed for five seasons and played nearly 110 rounds across 39 tournaments.
After graduating from Houston in 2021, Gibson competed as a professional on the PGA Tour Americas and other mini tours in the United States and Scotland.
In 2024, he served as the caddy for PGA Tour professional and former Houston volunteer assistant coach MJ Daffue before joining the Cougar staff for the 2025-26 season.
“This program has given me everything, and I wanted to return to give back to it. I enjoy player development and helping young players work to get better every day. I know what our guys go through on a daily basis with school and practice, and I want to help them reach their goals in college and at the next level,” Gibson said. “I am grateful to (Mike Booker Head) Coach (Andrew) Danna and to Senior Deputy David Williams for this opportunity and look forward to the start of the season.”
“Andrew will be a great addition to our staff. He brings a wealth of knowledge and organization that will be helpful for our program and student-athletes,” Danna said. “He’s a Houston Men’s Golf alum who’s had success playing the game after college, and I’m looking forward to working with him as we build toward a bright future.”
As the Cougars’ volunteer assistant coach a year ago, Gibson helped lead Houston to team championships at the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas, in February and opened a sweep of the team and individual titles at the Argent Financial Classic at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, La., on Sept. 8-9, 2025.
Three Cougars – Hudson Weibel, Bryant Hiskey II and Grant Doggett – won individual championships during the year with Weibel’s three leading the way.
The Cougars advanced to the NCAA Bermuda Run Regional in North Carolina in May, the program’s sixth straight NCAA Regional postseason appearance.
As a student-athlete, Gibson earned a career-best second-place finish at the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas, and fell on the second hole of a playoff to teammate Alexander Frances. It was one of four Top-10 finishes he enjoyed during his collegiate career.
Gibson tied for 28th at the 2021 NCAA Kingston Springs Regional after opening that tournament with a 68 at The Golf Club of Tennessee.
