Dan Marant joined University of Houston Football in August 2021 as its Associate Director of Sports Medicine and was promoted to Head Football Athletic Trainer in April 2022. The 2023 Football season will be his third with the Cougars.
In his current role, Marant oversees the medical care of 100+ football student-athletes. He is responsible for creating, executing and managing rehabilitation and treatment plans for the program as well as communicates directly to coaches and support staff about injuries or changes in student-athletes’ medical status. He works closely with Houston's sports performance staff regarding weight room modifications for injured student-athletes and schedules medical appointments with Memorial Hermann healthcare system or other necessary medical providers.
As the Head Football Athletic Trainer, he communicates with NFL or other professional organizations regarding draft eligible players, coordinates medical coverage for home events and communicates with visiting teams’ sports medicine staff and supervises assistant athletic trainers, intern athletic trainer, MAT students and undergraduate students.
Prior to his promotion in April 2022, Marant spent eight months as the Cougars' Associate Director of Sports Medicine. In the role, he assisted the head athletic trainer with weight room and practice modification plans for injured student-athletes, managed the sports medicine department budget and inventory and ordered all medical supplies, rehabilitation equipment, and athletic braces. He also served as the liaison for hiring of work study students and oversaw athletic training intern, master’s students, and undergraduate students.
Marant came to Houston following one year at Southeastern Louisiana where he started as an Assistant Athletic Trainer for Football and Softball before being elevated to Head Football Athletic Trainer. There, he oversaw the medical care of all Lions' Football student-athletes and reported to the director of sports medicine regarding student-athlete injuries and other medical incidents and oversaw assistant athletic trainers and undergraduate students.
He garnered additional experience at the professional level including four months with the DC Defenders XFL Football Team as Seasonal Assistant Athletic Trainer (January 2020-April 2020) and six months with the Atlanta Falcons (July 2019-December 2019) as Seasonal Assistant Athletic Trainer. With the Defenders, Marant assisted in evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation services of more than 50 professional football athletes including accompanying athletes to physician and diagnostic imaging appointments and assisting strength and conditioning staff with player warm-ups, workouts, and recovery sessions. With the Falcons, he supervised and documented athletes’ recovery and treatment while assisting in rehab and treatment of Falcons players through soft tissue mobilization, therapeutic exercises, and modality-based recovery among other responsibilities.
Marant received his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Penn State in May 2017 and was awarded his Master of Science in Athletic Training from Kentucky in May 2019. At Kentucky, he served as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Wildcats' Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track & Field programs. He also completed a two-month Athletic Training Summer Internship with the Chicago Bears and assisted with Kentucky Football during summer workouts and training camp.
Marant is American Heart Association CPR/ First Aid Certified, Structure and Function Dry Needling Certified, a Licensed Athletic Trainer – Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation and is a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and National Athletic Trainers’ Association in addition to being Graston Technique M-1 trained.
