Joe Thon

Joe Thon joined the University of Houston Baseball program in August 2019 as a student assistant coach before becoming the volunteer assistant prior to the 2020 season. In his role, he assists in a variety of coaching roles, including working with hitters and coaching first base, as well as assisting with practice planning and creating reports on individual student-athletes on the team.

Prior to joining the Cougars, Thon served as a summer intern for the Houston Astros during the 2019 summer. He helped analyze and balance revenue summaries, verified accounts for reconciling payments and processed and organized invoices for the Astros and Astros Foundation.

The previous summer, he served as an intern for NFK, underwriting multi-million-dollar assets, analyzing debt structures, assisting with development and creation of client marketing materials, and coordinated bank/investor logistics.
Â
Before interning, Thon enjoyed a seven-year minor league career.
Â
An infielder, Thon was drafted in the Fifth Round (Pick 156) by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2010 out of Academia Perpetuo Socorro in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He played in the Blue Jays organization until 2016 when he signed to join the St. Louis Cardinals. Thon played in the Cardinals farm system through 2017, reaching as high as Class AA with the Springfield Cardinals.

In total, Thon appeared in over 500 games across his MiLB career, posting a .243/.356/.318 slash with 79 doubles, 17 triples, 27 home runs and 178 RBI.

Thon also played for Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente in Puerto Rico from October 2010 through December 2016.

Fluent in Spanish, Thon assisted with daily interviews and translations for Spanish speaking players during his time as a player.

Thon is pursuing a business degree from the C.T. Bauer College of Business and is expected to graduate in May 2021.
