- Carter was a two-time all-state selection in baseball, earning first-team honors as a junior and second-team honors from both the Omaha World Herald (all-Nebraska) and Lincoln Journal Star (Super State) as a senior
- Batted .467 during spring season of his junior campaign and .465 during the summer
- Three-sport athlete, he also was an all-conference performer in basketball and set school records in football for career touchdown passes and passing yards in a season
