PREVIEW: #25 Houston Closes Non-Conference Schedule at Georgia Southern

HOUSTON – The #25 Houston Football team wraps up its non-conference slate with a trip to Statesboro, Ga., for the team's first-ever meeting with Georgia Southern.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Houston's offense as a whole has been elite to begin the year, ranking seventh nationally with 527.3 yards per game – the rushing attack ranks 11th nationally (264.0 yards per game) and the passing attack ranks 46th (263.3 yards per game).
Houston has quickly established itself as a top secondary in the country after three weeks. STAR Javion White and cornerback Jalen Mayo, both in their first season at Houston, have been Houston's top graded cornerbacks (by PFF positions). White ranks third in the Big 12 and ninth nationally with a 78.9 defense grade while Mayo sits in seventh in the Big 12 and 17^th nationally with a 77.3.
Senior running back Makhi Hughes is bouncing back in big ways in his reunion with Head Coach Willie Fritz. After running for 1,300+ yards in each of his first two seasons with Tulane, he quickly established himself as one of Houston's lead backs with 98 yards in the season opener and surpassed 3,000 career yards against Texas Tech.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

Saturday marks the first meeting between Houston and Georgia Southern and the return of Willie Fritz to Statesboro, Ga., after coaching the Eagles for two seasons from 2014-15.
Over the last five seasons, Houston has been one of the best among Power 4 schools on the road, winning 18 games away from TDECU Stadium – the fourth-most nationally. The Cougars' 18-13 road winning percentage (.581) is the 18th best in the country and second best in the Big 12 Conference.
Houston has rushed for 175+ yards in six consecutive games and in 15 of Coach Fritz's 27 games at the helm. In those 15 games with 175+ rushing yards, the Cougars have scored multiple rushing touchdowns in eight.
Houston is ranked in the top 25 in the AP Poll (#25) for the fourth consecutive week. It marks the first time since 2016 the Cougars have been ranked in the first four polls to begin a season.
When Houston has been in trouble on third down, the Cougar have converted at the second-highest clip in the nation (66.67%).

SCOUTING GEORGIA SOUTHERN

After opening the season with a 31-0 victory over Charleston Southern, Georgia Southern has fallen in back-to-back matchups to Clemson (22-7) and Jax State (31-27).
The Eagles rank 19^th in the country in total defense, allowing 255.3 yards per game, while also adding 9.3 tackles for loss per game, ranking fourth in the nation.
Quarterback Max Johnson has led Georgia Southern's attack so far this year, going 78-for-119 with two touchdowns and an interception. David Mbadinga has led the rushing efforts with 135 yards.
