Houston scores double-digits while freshman Caden Cooper posts quality start

Cooper (2-2) threw 6.2 innings, allowing just one run on a solo home run while striking out seven for his first career quality start for Houston (20-28). A&M Corpus Christi's (23-25) Pierre-Luc Jacques (2-3) took the loss, ceding one run on three hits in 2.0 innings.Â

GAME SUMMARY
Houston struck first in the bottom of the first. Broussard posted his first hit of the game, then scored in the next at-bat as Climie doubled to left field. The Cougars added another in the third to extend their lead to two.

The Islanders got on the board with a solo homer off the bat of Max Towchik in the top of the fifth, but Houston responded with three straight innings with crooked numbers. Climie homered in the bottom of the fifth, driving home both himself and Broussard to push the Cougars' edge to three. In the sixth, Fields hit a two-run homer of his own while sophomore Jackson LaLima scored on a wild pitch and Cox scored on a Broussard ground out to make the score 8-1.Â

The Cougars capped the scoring with another two runs on a pair of wild pitches, sealing a 10-1 victory.Â

Houston plays its penultimate weekend series of the season as it heads to Tucson, Ariz., for a three-game set against Arizona. Game one is at 8 p.m. CT Friday while game two follows at 8 p.m. CT Saturday. The series finale starts at 2 p.m. CT Sunday. All three games will air on ESPN+.Â
