Offense Shines to Start Weekend at Kansas

Houston out-hits Kansas in series opener

Freshman Connor Udland (1-1) received the loss for the Cougars (12-9, 1-3 Big 12) after tossing 4.1 innings in relief while striking out six. Throwing the last 3.1 innings for Kansas (13-8, 2-2 Big 12), Boede Rahe (4-0) claimed the win, allowing one run on four hits and walking three.Â

GAME SUMMARY
The Cougars started the game with a bang, plating four runs in the top of the first and forcing the Jayhawk starter from the game. Sophomore McClane Helton led off with a walk and scored as Broussard doubled to left center. Broussard would come home on a single from junior Easton Winfield while redshirt sophomore Xavier Perez and Winfield scored as senior Antonelli Savattere singled to right field.

Kansas used a solo homer to get on the board in the bottom of the first, but the Cougars piled more runs on in the third. Savattere picked up his third RBI of the game as he drove home Winfield and freshman Blake Fields pushed the lead to five as he scored on a sacrifice squeeze from senior Tyler Cox.Â

The Jayhawks turned the tables with a six-spot in the bottom of the third to take a 7-6 lead and added three more runs in the fourth to push its edge to four.Â

Houston answered in the sixth. Perez hit his fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot to right field that also drove home Broussard to cut the deficit to 10-8. Fields doubled home junior Riley Jackson later in the inning to further shrink the gap, setting up the Cougars to tie the game in the eighth as Cox slipped a double down the left-field line to plate Fields.

Kansas ultimately claimed the 12-10 win as Tyson LeBlanc hit a two-run homer to right field to reestablish the Jayhawk lead.Â
