Houston earns walk-off run rule win over Lafayette; fall against Penn State
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team split both games of its doubleheader at the Houston Invitational at Cougar Softball Stadium on Friday.
The Cougars (6-1) began the day with a 12-4 run rule victory over Lafayette (0-2) via a walk-off three-run homer from sophomore Isabel Cintron. Houston later dropped its first contest of the season, capping off the night with a 10-2 loss against Penn State (5-2). After starting the season 6-0 following the victory over Lafayette, the Cougars matched the program's third best record to start to a season since 2012.

Key Innings
2nd | With freshmen Leilani Garcia and RyLee Gardner at the corners, Redmond connected on a pitch and reached first on a fielder's choice as a throwing error allowed Garcia to score, advancing Redmond and Gardner to second and third. Sophomore Madox Mitchael later brought Gardner home on a sac fly to center, tying the game at 3-3 heading into the third.
4th | Down 4-3 in the fourth, Redmond tied the game with a leadoff solo shot to deep center. With Mitchael at third following a walk, a steal at second and advancing to third via ground out, Hartley handed Houston its first lead of the night with a two-run homer to deep center.
6th | The bottom of the sixth was all Cougars, as they loaded the bases with no outs to set up prime scoring opportunities late. Fielding errors and hits gave Houston additional runs before Cintron ended the game with a walk-off three-run shot to deep center, earning the Cougars their second run rule victory of the season.

- The Cougars called the game early with a tremendous six-run sixth inning, capped off by a three-run walk-off homer from Cintron to win 12-4 via run rule.
