Weibel Leads Men’s Golf in Argent Financial Classic First Round

Senior drains six birdies on way to 4-under 68 to tie for second after 18 holes; Second Round on Monday
CHOUDRANT, La. – University of Houston Men's Golf senior Hudson Weibel drained six birdies on the way to a 4-under 68 to lead the Cougars and tie for second following the First Round of the Argent Financial Classic at Squire Creek Country Club on Sunday.
Starting off No. 10 on the 7,185-yard, par-72 course, Weibel moved under par with a birdie on his first hole of the season and quickly moved to 3-under with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 13-14.
The Dallas native rebounded from a bogey at No. 16 to make birdie on the next hole and added a pair of birdies on his second nine to tie with Joshua Hill (South Alabama) and Oskari Schuvalow (Louisiana Tech).
Louisiana's Malan Potgieter held the individual lead after the First Round with a 65. Dylane Kane (LSU), Alfons Bondesson (LSU), Pablo Garcia (Troy), Raines Watson (Rice) and Will Drake (Jacksonville State) were tied for fifth at 69.
As a team, Houston stood in eighth with a score of 1-under 287.
Louisiana held the First-Round lead at 280 to finish one stroke ahead of Rice. South Alabama (282), Troy (284) and Memphis(285) rounded out the Top-Five leaders.
Playing in his first tournament as a member of the Cougars' starting lineup, sophomore Hsuan-Yi Chen joined juniors Grant Doggett and Chi Chun Chen in a tie for 49th at 73. Making his Houston debut after transferring from San Diego, senior Kevin An was tied for 70th at 75. Competing as an individual, senior Bryant Hiskey II was tied for 84th at 76.
The tournament continues Monday with the Final Round beginning Tuesday morning.

For Monday's Second Round, Houston will compete in groups with student-athletes from Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech.
