
Cougars Suffer Setback Against LSU

Houston stumbles in three-set loss to Tigers
HOUSTON – The Houston Volleyball team took its first loss of the season, falling in three sets to LSU at Fertitta Center on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Halle Schroder led Houston's (5-1) offense with 13 kills and a .267 hitting percentage while also picking up her 20th career double-double after earning 10 digs. Sophomore Alyssa Gonzales shined off the bench, picking up six kills and a .455 efficiency along with no serving or reception errors. Senior Avery Shimaitis and redshirt senior Barakat Rahmon each posted five blocks apiece.Â

LSU (4-2) quickly established themselves in the contest, winning seven of the first 10 points in the opening frame. Houston fought back to tie the set at 11-11 and 13-13, but a 3-0 run for the Tigers put LSU in front for good as it coasted to a 25-18 set win.Â

Houston seized the momentum early in the second with a 3-0 run to go up 6-3 and extended its edge to five at 12-7, but LSU answered with a 5-0 run to even the set. The Cougars didn't allow an LSU lead until 16-15, but the slight gap was all the Tigers needed to claim the second, 25-23.

LSU jumped in front to start the third, securing nine of the first 15 points to take the lead. Evening the set at 14-14, Houston put itself in front for the first time in the frame as Gonzales rattled off back-to-back kills to give the Cougars a 19-18 edge. The home team extended its lead to three as Shimaitis picked up her seventh kill of the match, but the Tigers secured the sweep as it fought off two set points and won the set, 26-24.Â

Houston heads back on the road for a pair of tests against #17 Purdue and #4 Kentucky next weekend in Lexington, Ky. The Cougars face the Boilermakers to start play at 10 a.m., Saturday, before closing the weekend against the host Wildcats at 1 p.m., Sunday.Â
