Department record 10 programs post perfect APR scores in 2023-24 NCAA APR release
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Athletics Department saw a department record 10 programs post perfect scores as part of the 2023-24 Academic Progress Rate (APR) report which was released by the NCAA on Tuesday afternoon.
Fourteen of Houston's 15 teams scored 950 or higher, the Cougars' most over the last seven years. Four teams posted a perfect multi-year APR score of 1,000, including men's basketball, men's cross country, women's golf and women's volleyball which is top 10% for each program in each respective sport across the country leading to public recognition awards. All 15 sports exceeded the NCAA's required minimum score of 930 for the third consecutive year.
Men's Basketball posted a perfect score for the fifth consecutive year and sixth in the last eight years. Men's Cross Country posted a perfect score for the sixth consecutive year and for the 14th time in 17 opportunities. Volleyball's perfect score was its fourth straight and seventh in the last eight years. Men's Golf recorded a perfect score for the third time in the last four years and Women's Golf posted a perfect score for the ninth time in the last 10 years with their fourth straight perfect score.
As an institution, Houston's APR of 987 is a department record and qualifies the school for the NCAA Division I Academic Unit for the first time ever.
For the first time in the last 16 years, women's track posted a perfect score, and women's soccer and women's swimming & diving scored perfect scores for the first time since 2015-16. Men's track 987 was the best mark since 2015-16 when it scored a program best 994.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. The Division I Committee on Academics (CoA) oversees the Academic Progress Rate as part of its responsibilities with the Academic Performance Program. The CoA sets policies and recommends legislative changes to the Division I Board of Directors which has the final say on changes in Division I.
