Men’s Golf Finishes First Round at NCAA Urbana Regional

Junior Hudson Weibel tied for 19th with even-par 71; Second Round begins Tuesday morning
URBANA, Ill. – University of Houston Men's Golf junior Hudson Weibel fired an even-par 71 to lead the Cougars and tie for 19th during the First Round of the NCAA Urbana Regional on Monday afternoon.
Competing in his first NCAA Regional on the 7,533-yard, par-71 course at Atkins Golf Club, Weibel moved under par early with a birdie on the par-4 third hole.
The Dallas native returned to even par following a bogey at No. 8 and ran into trouble with a double bogey at No. 11. However, Weibel used birdies at No. 12 and No. 16 to return to even par and closed the round with back-t0-back pars.
As a team, #38 Houston finished with a score of 295 and stood in 12th.
Senior Wolfgang Glawe was tied for 47th at 74 while sophomore Chi Chun Chen and senior Laurenz Schiergen were tied for 53rd at 75. Senior Jacob Borow stood in 74th at 80.
#14 Illinois held the team lead at 277 to finish the first day two strokes ahead of #23 Texas Tech. #35 UNLV (281), Troy (283), #26 Long Beach State (285), Marquette (285), #2 Oklahoma State (286), Illinois State (289), Pacific (290 ) and NC State (291) completed the Top 10 leaders.
Illinois' Jackson Buchanan grabbed the individual lead with a 63 Monday. Troy's Jake Springer stood in second at 67 with Calum Scott (Texas Tech), Caden Fioroni (UNLV) and Patrick Adler (Marquette) tied for third at 68.
The tournament continues with the Second Round on Tuesday and the Final Round wrapping up Wednesday.
The top five teams and top individual not on a qualifying team at each NCAA Regional advance to the NCAA Championships set for Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., on May 24-29.

For Tuesday's Second Round, Houston will compete in groups with student-athletes from North Carolina and NC State off the No. 10 tee at 9:50 a.m.
Borow begins the tournament at 9:28 a.m., Tuesday, with Chen (9:39 a.m.), Schiergen (9:50 a.m.), Glawe (10:01 a.m.) and Weibel (10:12 a.m.) following.

NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY
With this season's selection, Houston Men's Golf will compete as a team in 25 NCAA Regionals during the program's rich history with nine Top-Five team finishes.
This marks the fifth straight season in which Houston will play as a team at an NCAA Regional.
It also marks the 11th NCAA Regional in which the Cougars will compete under Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke, who is in his 16th season at Houston.
Houston captured the team championship at the 1998 NCAA Central Regional at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas while four Cougars – Michael Perras, 2016 NCAA Franklin Regional; Blair Hamilton, 2016 NCAA Lubbock Regional; Brett Callas, 2003 NCAA Central Regional; and Dean Larsson, 1994 NCAA Central Regional – earned medalist honors at their respective events.
A year ago, the Cougars finished sixth at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional at University Club, falling only three strokes shy of advancing to the NCAA Championships. All-American and Big 12 Player of the. Year Santiago De La Fuente finished 14th with a score of even-par 216 to lead Houston.
