Five Houston Men’s Golfers earn Top 15 finishes as part of individual play
HUMBLE, Texas & MONTGOMERY, Texas – Five University of Houston Men's Golfers earned Top 15 finishes while competing individually across two rain-soaked area tournaments, led by sophomore Hudson Weibel who fired a 3-under, 141 to finish three strokes off the lead in fifth place at the weather-shortened, 36-hole Houston Classic at Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas.
Weibel was followed by senior teammate Laurenz Schiergen who carded a 2-under, 142, to finish in a two-way tie for sixth. Seth Bearden, a sophomore from Midwestern State (6-under, 138), earned the top spot.
Houston sophomore Grant Doggett (3-over, 216) surged eight spots up the leaderboard during Tuesday's Final Round at the 54-hole Bentwater Intercollegiate from Miller Course at Bentwater Yacht & Country Club in Montgomery, Texas, finishing 12th overall and tops among individual competitors across the 81-member field.
Doggett set new career bests in Low 54 holes (previous 219), relative to par (previous 4-over) and best finisher (previous: 17th), led by a 3-under on the course's Par 5s – the sixth-best mark among the field.
Junior Bryant Hiskey II vaulted 11 spots Tuesday, earning a 15th place finisher (4-over, 217), finishing the event 1-over on Par 3s as part of the field's 13th-best scoring average. Sophomore Chi Chun Chen finished 44th at 9-over, 222. Chattanooga teammates freshman Ethan Whitaker and senior Braedon Wear paced the field at 5-under, 208, to lead the Mocs to a team victory (2-under, 850).
At the 36-hole Houston Classic, Weibel earned a 5-under across eight par-5 opportunities, second best among the 90-member field, highlighted by an eagle – one of eight Monday by the field – on No. 8 as part of an Opening Round 2-under. Schiergen tapped in four birdies across a seven-hole stretch during his Opening Round.
Sophomore Chi Chun Chen finished at 2-over, 146, thanks to an even-par Opening Round, to conclude the event in a seven-way tie for 15th. Junior Ruben Lindsay finished tied for 29th at 5-over, 149.
