Hudson Weibel Paces Men’s Golf As Cougars Open Spring Schedule

HUMBLE, Texas & MONTGOMERY, Texas – University of Houston sophomore Hudson Weibel fired a 3-under, 141 and sits three strokes off the lead through 36 holes following Day 1 Houston Classic at Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas, on Monday.

The Dallas, Texas, native, who is alone in fifth place, was one of seven Cougars competing across two tournaments in the region as Houston opened its spring schedule at the Houston Classic and the Bentwater Intercollegiate from Miller Course at Bentwater Yacht & Country Club in Montgomery, Texas.

Weibel is followed by senior teammate Laurenz Schiergen who carded a 2-under, 142, to finished in a two-way tie for sixth. The duo is chasing tournament leader Seth Bearden, a sophomore from Midwestern State (6-under, 138).

Weibel earned a 5-under across eight par-5 opportunities, second best among the 90-member field, highlighted by an eagle – one of eight on the day by the field – on No. 8 as part of an opening round 2-under. Schiergen tapped in four birdies across a seven-hole stretch during his Opening Round.

Sophomore Chi Chun Chen is in the mix at 2-over, 146, thanks to an even-par Opening Round, to conclude his Day 1 in a seven-way tie for 15th. Junior Ruben Lindsay is tied for 29th at 5-over, 149.

At the Bentwater Intercollegiate, sophomore Grant Doggett surged down the stretch of his Opening Round thanks to five birdies in a 7-hole stretch, and is tied for 20th at even-par, 142, through 36 holes. He is five strokes off the lead, held by Abilene Christian sophomore Preston Cooper (5-under, 137).

Junior Bryant Hiskey II sits in 26th place at 1-over, 143, while freshman Hsuan-Yi Chen is tied for 44th at 5-over, 147.

Following the Houston Classic and Bearkat Intercollegiate, Houston opens the spring season as a team at the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas, on Feb. 17-18, 2025.

The Cougars then compete at the Cabo Collegiate at Twin Dolphin Club in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on March 2-4, 2025, before returning home to play host to their All-American Intercollegiate at Golf Club of Houston on March 17-18, 2025.
