Houston is one of 11 schools with a pair of semifinalists
HOUSTON – A pair of Houston Cougar Football student-athletes, quarterback Conner Weigman and linebacker Corey Platt Jr., were named Comeback Player of the Year Semifinalists after strong seasons in their return to the gridiron in 2025. Both were Comeback Player of the Year Preseason Watchlist selections.
Weigman, coming off multiple injuries at his previous institution, led Houston to a 9-3 record, its best in five years, and a #21 ranking in the College Football Playoff rankings at the end of the regular season. The Cypress, Texas native showcased his skill throwing the football and rushing the ball with 32 total touchdowns, 21 passing and 11 rushing. Weigman is the only Power 4 quarterback this season with 20+ passing TDs and 10+ rushing TDs. The junior dual-threat passer threw a touchdown and rushed for a touchdown in seven games this season and eclipsed the 5,000 career passing yards mark.
Platt, who had not played since the first game of the 2023 season at his previous school, posted five tackles for loss, the fourth most on the team, three sacks, the third most on the team and recorded 39 tackles good for ninth on the squad. Platt forced a fumble, broke up two passes, including a batted ball off his helmet in the red zone at Baylor that ended up getting intercepted in the endzone. The Little Rock, Ark., native posted a season-high six tackles at Oklahoma State, a career-high 2.0 tackles for loss at UCF and recorded his first sack in two years at Rice in his first action since his first injury in 2023.
