Greenberry and Wendel each hit .538 as Cougars challenged Top 10 Sun Devils
HOUSTON – The Houston Volleyball team fell in four sets to #9 Arizona State on Friday night at Fertitta Center.
Freshman Tara Greenberry and redshirt junior Ella Wendel shined offensively as they hit 8-1-13 and 7-0-13, respectively, as each tallied a .538 efficiency.
Freshman Gillian Pitts posted her fourth straight match with 10+ digs, earning 11 in the match, while senior Brenya Reid earned her fourth consecutive match in double-figure kills, leading the team with 13. Everyone contributed defensively for Houston, as five players posted five-or-more digs while six Cougars earned at least one block.
Through the first six points of the match, Arizona State and Houston found themselves tied while Reid had gone a perfect three kills on three swings. Despite back-to-back service aces from freshman Gillian Pitts, the Sun Devils had claimed a four-point lead at the media timeout and went on to win, 25-14.
Houston took control early in the second. A 3-0 run gave the Cougars the lead and a 5-1 stretch extended the advantage to 11-6. While the Sun Devils trimmed into the edge with three consecutive points of their own, a powerful kill from redshirt junior Ella Wendel clinched the media timeout as Houston lead 15-12. The Cougars never relinquished their lead and two blocks in the team's final three points of the set gave Houston a 25-20 set win.
The Cougars kept the momentum into the third. Just like the second, a 3-0 run early put Houston up 4-2 and while Arizona State tied the set at 5-5 and 7-7, the Cougars never ceded the lead and forced Arizona State to use both of its timeouts by the time the score reached 15-11. The Sun Devils took the lead on the heels of a 5-0 stretch at 17-16 and pushed their edge to 20-17 with another 3-0 run, allowing them to win the set, 25-18.
The Sun Devils held onto the edge into the fourth, winning six of the first 10 points and forcing Houston to take a timeout at 10-6. Arizona State continued to hold Houston at an arm's length for the remainder of the set, clinching the frame, 25-16, and the match, 3-1.
