Gonzalez, Pitts set new career highs in kills, digs in Saturday’s loss
HOUSTON – Senior Brenya Reid surpassed 1,000 career kills while redshirt sophomore Alyssa Gonzales and freshman Gillian Pitts posted new career highs in kills and digs, respectively, as the Houston Volleyball team fell in four sets to #21 Baylor at the Fertitta Center on Saturday afternoon.
Reid finished the day with 14 kills, bringing her career total to 1,006 while Gonzalez posted 22 kills to lead the Cougars (8-17, 1-13 Big 12). Pitts also set a new career high with 20 digs, topping her previous best by seven, while redshirt junior Ella Wendel notched seven blocks in her second consecutive game.
A leveled 6-6 start to the match leaned Baylor's (15-9, 10-6) way after a 4-0 run led to a Houston timeout. Several errors from the Bears opened the door for the Cougars as they rode a 5-1 run to even the score at 11-11. Baylor would ultimately find a late push to create distance on the board and win the opener, 25-20.
The second set mirrored the first with both teams battling to a 7-7 tie at the start the frame. Houston responded with a 4-0 run to pull away and force a Baylor timeout. Leading 13-12 at the midway point in the frame, the Cougars sparked a 12-2 rally, going on to close out the set, 25-14, and leveling the match.
A competitive third set saw neither team lead by more than two points until Baylor held a 17-14 advantage. Houston closed the score to a 20-19 deficit before dropping five of the next six points as Baylor took the third set 25-20.
Another tight start to the fourth frame set the tone for the remainder of the match. Knotted at 20-20, both sides traded points while earning several match and set point opportunities before the Bears rallied for back-to-back points to win the frame, 35-33, and the match, 3-1.
